Which History to Trust: A Dad’s Dilemma

One of our kids is beginning high school this year, and it is my charge to select or construct the curriculum for history in our home school. As well, it is for me to oversee this portion of her education in the coming years.

I do not take this responsibility lightly, which is the reason for this letter, posted both publicly, and privately to people whom I respect.

It is my hope that you might offer some guidance in this endeavor, that my child and I may avoid wasted investments of time, energies, and cash in history books and/or programs whose sole purpose is to manipulate history to dovetail with an anti-American agenda, which to me defines itself as anywhere to the left of our founders, counter to the principled Unanimous Declaration, and at odds with the original intent of our Constitution.

What I’d like to offer my daughter is a solid foundation in honest history, in its proper context; something that she can build upon throughout her life, and that will protect her from being taken in by the spinners and string pullers.

Which history to trust, that’s my dilemma… (getting her interest is a whole ‘nother problem :] )

If you could share your experience with trustworthy sources of American and World History, or your knowledge of any reliable curriculum or structured reading lists, or if you have any other advice to offer (other than sending our kid to public school), we would be grateful in hearing it.

Please comment on the post, or send a note to subconch@gmail.com ~Thanks

Entitle, Entitled, Entitlement?

changing definitions, entitle, entitled, entitlement, history, language

The word “Entitle” used to mean: to give a title; “entitled” was: to be dignified thereby. @

When did the term “entitled” come to mean “deserving of the labor of another”? I’d guess… when “welfare” came to mean the same thing. @

In the truest sense, we are “entitled” by God, by nature, with life and liberty; “entitlements” on earth that are not absolute. @

Entitled, as being distinguished, or as having claim, presupposes merit, or honor, or Grace. @

~~~
Following are early American understandings of “entitle”. Interesting that the form “entitlement” is absent.
ENTI’TLE, v.t. [L. titulus, a title.]
~from Websters 1828 Dictionary.
1. To give a title to; to give or prefix a name or appellation; as, to entitle a book, Commentaries on the laws of England.
2. To superscribe or prefix as a title. Hence as titles are evidences of claim or property, to give a claim to; to give a right to demand or receive. The labor of the servant entitles him to his wages. Milton is entitled to fame. Our best services do not entitle us to heaven.
3. To assign or appropriate by giving a title.
4. To qualify; to give a claim by the possession of suitable qualifications; as, an officer’s talents entitle him to command.
5. To dignify by a title or honorable appelation. In this sense, title is often used.
6. To ascribe.
ENTI’TLED, pp.
Dignified or distinguished by a title; having a claim as, every good man is entitled to respect.
ENTITLE 1775 Definition
ENTI’TLE (v.t. from the French entituler)
~from John Ash’s 1775 Dictionary (imaged)
To give a claim to any thing, to grant as claimed by a title; to prefix a title; to dignify with a title.
Enti’tled (p. from entitle)
Having a title, dignified with a title, having a claim; with to: as, “He was entitled to any favour.”
Enti’tling (p. a. from entitle)
Giving a title, giving a claim.
What good is a long memory in protecting ourselves from recurring danger, when we fail to recognize any problem in the first place?
~tdv on twitter
I’d trade full-out amnesia for perfect recall, if it came with the rooted ability to identify bullsh!t & peril every first time I saw it.
