Unauthorized Relativist Hypocrisy, and the Sacrificial Constitution

Leftists think they have the ‘authority’ to pick and choose which clauses of the Constitution are defensible, and which are dispensable…

…The left will trumpet and defend its rights to free speech & press, using them to dispense with the right to be armed, and worship…

…also notice that among the Constitutional clauses that leftists find defensible, only partial, relative protection is warranted…

…Freedom of speech is only championed by the left, where that speech champions the left…

…This relativism is the problem with leftists; they are devoid of consistency in core principles, which has always made them dangerous…

…as the left imagines it is principled, to that end, they circumvent the Constitution’s principled machinery, diluting it, endangering us.~

~~

A beauty of the U.S. Constitution is the brevity by which it provides for We the People to measure our government…

…The ugliness of liberalism is the sacrifice of constitutional footings for complex, arbitrary govt, that serves to measure We the People.~

People telling people what to do, what not to do, and you, the Constitutionalist.

…what is law but people telling people what to do, what not to do? Would you rather have a deliberative congress, comprised of representatives of the body of the people, tell you what to do, what not to do, or would you rather one man, or his friends, or five judges, or their friends, tell you what to do, what not to do.
Naturally, generally, you would choose neither, but given that you’d presumably rather also not have complete anarchy, then it is safe to presume that you would rather the representative, deliberative body, telling people what to do, which, as it may enter as a surprise, makes you a Constitutionalist!
…and on those people that are vested with the power of telling people what to do, what not to do, who, or what, tells THEM what to do, what not to do? That’s right! The Constitution, you Constitutionalist! By the way, that Constitution doesn’t tell YOU what to do, what not to do, just THEM, and it also says that ONLY they, that deliberative, representative body, can make law, not one man, or his friends, or five judges, or their friends.

President George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation

Almighty God, george washington, gratitude, humility, proclamation, reverence, thanksgiving, U.S. Constitution

I’m sharing this with you all, with hopes that your families and yourselves, might find the blessings upon which to be grateful to our God, on this Thanksgiving Day.

This writing by our 1st President is intriguing, as it goes to the character, the perspective, the reverence, the very nature of this man, of these men, that founded our great nation.

President George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation was penned at the request of Congress, who resolved that “he would recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging, with grateful hearts, the many signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a Constitution of government for their safety and happiness.”

Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation, which was to be published in papers nationwide, was enclosed in his Circular to the Governors of the States with the note: “I do myself the honor to enclose to your Excellency a Proclamation for a general Thanksgiving which I must request the favor of you to have published and made known in your State in the way and manner that shall be most agreeable to yourself.”

Notes, a brief glossary, and an image follow.

[New York, 3 October 1789]

By the President of the United States of America. a Proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor–and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me “to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.”

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be–That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks–for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation–for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war–for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed–for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted–for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions–to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually–to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed–to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness onto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord–To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and us–and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New-York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

Go: Washington

This transcription was found at The Papers of George Washington Site: http://gwpapers.virginia.edu/documents/thanksgiving/transcript.html

Notes:
The Constitution of the United States was ratified on June 21, 1788 when New Hampshire become the ninth State to agree. Rhode Island was the last State to ratify it, on May 29, 1790. The 1st United States Congress met from March 4, 1789 to March 4, 1791, President George Washington, the unanimous choice of the 69 electors in 1788, served in office from April 30, 1789 to March 4, 1797

Brief Glossary from Webster’s 1828 Dictionary:
Given for a timely context of language used. Very interesting! Listed in the order found in the proclamation.

thanksgiving: n. The act of rendering thanks or expressing gratitude for favors or mercies.
“Every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if received with thanksgiving.” 1 Tim.4.
1. A public celebration of divine goodness; also, a day set apart for religious services, specially to acknowledge the goodness of God, either in any remarkable deliverance from calamities or danger, or in the ordinary dispensation of his bounties. The practice of appointing an annual thanksgiving originated in New England.

providence: 3. In theology, the care and superintendence which God exercises over his creatures. He that acknowledges a creation and denies a providence, involves himself in a palpable contradiction; for the same power which caused a thing to exist is necessary to continue its existence. Some persons admit a general providence,but deny a particular providence, not considering that a general providence consists of particulars. A belief in divine providence, is a source of great consolation to good men. By divine providence is often understood God himself.

benefit: 1. An act of kindness; a favor conferred.
Bless the Lord,O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. Ps.103.

implore: 1. To call upon or for,in supplication; to beseech; to pray earnestly; to petition with urgency; to entreat; as, to implore the forgiveness of sins; to implore mercy.

happiness: The agreeable sensations which spring from the enjoyment of good; that state of a being in which his desires are gratified, by the enjoyment of pleasure without pain; felicity; but happiness usually expresses less than felicity, and felicity less than bliss. Happiness is comparative. To a person distressed with pain, relief from that pain affords happiness; in other cases we give the name happiness to positive pleasure or an excitement of agreeable sensations. Happiness therefore admits of indefinite degrees of increase in enjoyment, or gratification of desires. Perfect happiness, or pleasure unalloyed with pain, is not attainable in this life.
2. Good luck; good fortune.

beneficent: Doing good; performing acts of kindness and charity. It differs from benign (kind), as the act from the disposition; beneficence being benignity or kindness exerted in action.

signal: Eminent; remarkable; memorable; distinguished from what is ordinary; as a signal exploit; a signal service; a signal ace of benevolence. It is generally but not always used in a good sense.

manifold: [many and fold.] Of divers kinds; many in number; numerous; multiplied. O Lord, how manifold are thy works! Ps.104. I know your manifold transgressions. Amos.5.
1. Exhibited or appearing at divers times or in various ways; applied to words in the singular number; as the manifold wisdom of God, or his manifold grace. Eph.3. 1 Pet.4.

interposition: 2. Intervenient agency; as the interposition of the magistrate in quieting sedition. How many evidences have we of divine interposition in favor of good men!

supplication: 1. Entreaty; humble and earnest prayer in worship. In all our supplications to the Father of mercies, let us remember a world lying in ignorance and wickedness.

transgression: The act of passing over or beyond any law or rule of moral duty; the violation of a law or known principle of rectitude; breach of command.

concord: 1. Agreement between persons; union in opinions, sentiments, views or interests; peace; harmony.

temporal: 1. Pertaining to this life or this world or the body only; secular; as temporal concerns; temporal affairs. In this sense, it is opposed to spiritual. Let not temporal affairs or employments divert the mind from spiritual concerns, which are far more important. In this sense also it is opposed to ecclesiastical; as temporal power, that is, secular, civil or political power; temporal courts, those which take cognizance of civil suits. Temporal jurisdiction is that which regards civil and political affairs.
2. Measured or limited by time, or by this life or this state of things; having limited existence; opposed to eternal.
The things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal. 2 Cor.4.

Once we were States. Once we would say “NO”

Update 12.02.12 (add rel. links)
11.23.12 (rev. draft letter)

What if the U.S. government, like you know, the President or Congress, were to suddenly say ”It’s now against the law to be a Christian, and America will no longer tolerate that faith, and you people who practice Christianity will be punished going forward and backward, and the new American religion is officially going to be Islam.”?

You would, of course, rightly say “That’s ridiculous!” and “This is a FREE country!” or “Doesn’t the Constitution protect our freedom of religion?”

What, if then, the U.S. government, like you know, the President or Congress, or five of the nine persons on the Supreme Court, were to suddenly declare “It’s now illegal for television and radio and newspapers and magazines and the internet to say or write or show anything that is not approved first by the U.S. government.”?

Obviously, you would say “No way! This is America!” or “I can say what I want!” and “Who the hell do they think they are!!” or “Doesn’t the Bill of Rights protect Free Speech and the Freedom of the Press?!”

What if the majority in the U.S. government was united and unwavering in these blatant acts of tyranny, and what if the minority in the U.S. government who oppose this cruelty, were unwilling or afraid to stop it?  What then?  Who, then, will safeguard your liberty?

What would you DO about it?  What would we DO about it?  Sure, we’d say “NO”, “We’re not going to comply!”, and “That’s not a REAL law!”  But what about when the U.S. government starts using force, arresting people, or seizing bank accounts or other property for noncompliance?  Can we, as individuals, repel the massive power of the federal government?

…What if half of our neighbors didn’t care one bit about the this lawlessness and arbitrary rule, and by their ignorance, willfully submit to and empower it?

The Character of Representation

11 Thursday Oct 2012

america, character, election 2012, federalist, politics, representation, representatives, suffrage, U.S. Constitution, U.S.A., vote

Being how it is election season and all, I thought it appropriate to explore the character requisite in our chosen national representatives, particularly as viewed by the founders of our republic, and specifically as illustrated in the Constitution and the Federalist, because that’s how I do it, generally. Discoveries herein may be equally applied to our sovereign States and the various localities.

(Note: The Constitution is the fundamental framework of American government; the Federalist is the foremost authority on the Constitution.)

I should say that this brief, and in no way inclusive search for truth was embarked upon with not only self-evidence, but preconceived notions alit by a smaller portion of these very texts. Other words, I obviously knew what I’d find, because I already found it.

My findings, revelations that they aren’t, as bits shared below, strangely make no mention of physical appearance, gender, religious sect, hair style, musical talent, cunning, oratory skill, philanthropic plunderability (giving you stuff taken from others aptness), charisma, or affinity for certain pets, as essential to the character of representative government.

No, it’s mostly a lot of old blather about honor, fealty to the Constitution and country (I like these two the most), conscience, confidence, etcetera. If none of this makes sense to you, it’s okay, as you are not required to vote, and maybe it’s best that you don’t in this case, for the sake of liberty and posterity and stuff.

~~~
The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States. ~U.S. Constitution, art.VI, c.3
Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:–“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” ~U.S. Constitution, art.II, §.1, c.8
…to refine and enlarge the public views, by passing them through the medium of a chosen body of citizens, whose wisdom may best discern the true interest of their country, and whose patriotism and love of justice, will be least likely to sacrifice it to temporary or partial considerations. Under such a regulation, it may well happen, that the public voice, pronounced by the representatives of the people, will be more consonant to the public good, than if pronounced by the people themselves, convened for the purpose. ~Madison, Federalist No. 10, par. 16
As there is a degree of depravity in mankind, which requires a certain degree of circumspection and distrust: so there are other qualities in human nature, which justify a certain portion of esteem and confidence. Republican government presupposes the existence of these qualities in a higher degree than any other form. Were the pictures which have been drawn by the political jealousy of some among us, faithful likenesses of the human character, the inference would be, that there is not sufficient virtue among men for self-government; and that nothing less than the chains of despotism can restrain them from destroying and devouring one another. ~Madison, Federalist No. 55, par. 10
… the president and senators so chosen, will always be of the number of those who best understand our national interests, whether considered in relation to the several states or to foreign nations, who are best able to promote those interests, and whose reputation for integrity inspires and merits confidence. ~Jay, Federalist No. 64, par. 04
This process of election affords a moral certainty, that the office of president will seldom fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent degree endowed with the requisite qualifications. Talents for low intrigue, and the little arts of popularity, may alone suffice to elevate a man to the first honours of a single state; but it will require other talents, and a different kind of merit, to establish him in the esteem and confidence of the whole union, or of so considerable a portion of it, as would be necessary to make him a successful candidate for the distinguished office of President of the United States. It will not be too strong to say, that there will be a constant probability of seeing the station filled by characters preeminent for ability and virtue. And this will be thought no inconsiderable recommendation of the constitution, by those who are able to estimate the share which the executive in every government must necessarily have in its good or ill administration. Though we cannot acquiesce in the political heresy of the poet, who says:
“For forms of government, let fools contest– That which is best administered is best,”
yet we may safely pronounce, that the true test of a good government is, its aptitude and tendency to produce a good administration. ~Hamilton, Federalist No. 68, par. 08
With respect to their (the President and the Senate) responsibility, it is difficult to conceive how it could be increased. Every consideration that can influence the human mind, such as honour, oaths, reputation, conscience, the love of country, family affections and attachments, afford security for their fidelity. In short, as the constitution has taken the utmost care that they shall be men of talents and integrity, we have reason to be persuaded, that the treaties they make will be as advantageous as, all circumstances considered, could be made; and so far as the fear of punishment and disgrace can operate, that motive to good behaviour is amply afforded by the article on the subject of impeachments.  ~Jay, Federalist No. 64, par. 15
“For a brief moment this morning, Chinese currency traded at highest level against the dollar…ever. The U.S. has been traded. The world is increasingly cashing OUT of us, and cashing IN on China. When you pile up debt, you pile up folks who just think you’re a joke. They no longer think you’re a BUY, they think you’re a SELL. Think of that.”
